I met Moses shortly after he had been abandoned at the District Hospital. The nurse told me that he had showed up at the hospital in the morning so people assumed that his mother was waiting for treatment, but when it became evening and less people were around it was clear that he was alone. I had gone to visit another kid and found him in the ward alone. Life at the hospital for a child who has been abandoned is tough because there is no one to care for them. Moses has cerebral palsy and is unable to speak. When he was dropped off at the hospital he was only able to crawl.
The day before a friend of mine who has a small children’s home had been talking about how she wanted to take in a child with a disability, so I immediately called her to come meet him. He stayed with her for two years until we decided that it was time for him to move to PKC because getting him to school and therapy was a bit of a challenge.
Moses always has a big smile on his face and loves making jokes and dancing. He loves playing with all of the other kids at the house and is a great helper. After most meals he helps bring the plates of the kids who can’t walk to the kitchen when they are finished eating and occasionally jumps in to help feed.
We are glad to have Moses as a part of the PKC family. It’s been a pleasure to watch him grow up and progress. When was taken from the hospital, we had to give him a new last name because we don’t know his real name. We decided to call him Moses Zawadi, which means gift, and he lives up to his name by being a gift to everyone he meets.
I’m crying. I miss this kid! I miss all of you guys!
